A typical meeting at the Woodley Business Club will involve a friendly welcome at the Oakwood Centre in Woodley, tea and biscuits and the chance to meet a diverse range of local businesses.

Our meetings run from 8am to 10am on the second Tuesday of the month, and will typically start with open networking until 8.30am. Then we have a speaker who will discuss an issue, or a skill or service that is directly relevant to business needs. Sometimes this is in presentation format, sometimes it will be a workshop. For example we have had a brilliant workshop on getting the most from LinkedIn and another one was about how to make the most of networking. We’ve also had GDPR, Electronic tax returns, Leadership skills, Sales skills, SEO improvement…There is quite a list, we always try to ensure the speakers are educating us about essential business skills.

Around 9.15 am we get the chance to stand up individually, introduce our business and inform the group of the type of clients that we are looking for, or a business need that we may have. After that it’s back to open networking until 10am.

11th August 2020, 8am –  Why should you learn another language?  Where there is communication, there is understanding! – Marielle Patterson

At the end of the summer 2017 I had just got back from holiday and read an article in British Airways Business life magazine that 82% of us didn’t know a single word in the language of the country we had just visited! Isn’t that appalling? So I decided to do something about it and set up my tuition business so others could at least know a few words and embark on the fascinating journey of language, culture and let’s face it  – food and wine. For me the most important thing is MKP Solutions, my company strapline “ Where there is communication, there is understanding!” There are many other positives to learning another language – join us to find out what they are!

After 27 years in the corporate world and having been made redundant – what next? Marielle turned to her passion for languages – they had been part of her life since the year dot – She swapped the corporate rat race life and turned to education setting up MKP Solutions – mentoring others, sharing knowledge and allowing students to progress at their pace.  Spanish and French tuition tailor made according to the needs of her clients aged 6 to 65 plus.  The nature of tuition however is that is mostly after school so what to do during school time ? – well keeping with the education theme, alongside the self-employed life as a tutor, Marielle also works part-time as a Primary school teaching assistant. When she was at school, careers advice was “well you love languages so you should be a teacher”. Adamant all those years ago, not to follow a potentially “stereotypical” path, Marielle studied Contemporary European Studies with Spanish with majors in Economics and Spanish spending a year abroad at the University of Zaragoza School of Business. Graduating and starting working life as an assistant to a financial controller for a European promotions company before moving into Project Management and then a long term career in EDI with support, people and project management roles at Sterling Commerce and IBM. Redundancy reversed the corporate trend and now that careers advice came back into play – tutor/mentor/coach  – helping others develop a skill – it just happens to be in a foreign language!

26th August 2020, 8pm – We should never get sick, so why do we? – Dale Strickland-Clark

Your body is an amazing thing. This talk looks at a tiny part of it: the gut and how the gut gets help from microbes and viruses. We’ll look at how the microbes are involved in immunity and how modern life is disturbing the balance so that staying healthy requires constant vigilance.
The consequences of poorly balanced gut bacteria are numerous and cover most of what people call modern ailments, such as Alzheimer’s, IBS, autism, arthritis, Crohn’s disease, cancer and many more.

I’ve been interested in health all my life. I was an athlete and club squash champion in my twenties. For 20 years I worked as a photographer and found I could easily spot unhealthy people and wanted to help them but didn’t know enough to be useful. So I trained in hypnotherapy, NLP, nutrition and gut health, which gives me the skills to help with a really broad range of issues.
